The Spanish Department at Monterey Peninsula College offers a comprehensive approach to Spanish language learning. The Spanish degree program includes four semesters of the study of Spanish, one of the most influential languages and the fastest growing language in California. It provides students with the communication skills in understanding, speaking, reading and writing, and prepares them to enter the workforce in many industries where knowledge of Spanish is valuable and imperative. Courses in this degree program meet the language requirements at four-year universities, as well as general education and transfer requirements.

Why study Spanish?

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of Spanish speakers in the United States increased from 17.3 million in 1990 to 28.1 million in 2000.

By 2007 the number was 35 million.

More than 43 million people speak Spanish as a first language in the United States today, and that number continues to grow.

Additionally, the United States is home to nearly 12 million bilingual Spanish speakers. The US Census Bureau estimates that the US will have 138 million Spanish speakers by 2050, making it the biggest Spanish-speaking nation on Earth.

With the number of Spanish speakers rapidly increasing in our nation, the demand for educated bilingual speakers will continue to grow.

Practically every career can be enhanced with the study of Spanish. By becoming educated bilingual speakers our students are more competitive in the job market, and often find that companies offer extra pay or bonuses because of this ability.

Management, Marketing, Sales, Customer Service and Support, Government Agencies, Medicine, Law, Criminology, Education, Social Services, Psychology, Counseling Services, Computer Technology Support and Sales, Mass Media and Communications are only a sample of the fields where an educated bilingual speaker is highly valued.
