HOLIDAY (Campus Closed): Juneteenth (Observed)

  • Date: 06/19/2023  (all day)

On June 19, we commemorate the abolition of slavery in the United States and the day in 1865 when word of President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation finally reached the last slaves in Texas. The next year, on June 19, freed people in Texas staged the first annual "Jubilee Day" celebration.  It is a day to honor America's underlying promise of a life of liberty, equality, and freedom for everyone.  We are still working to fulfill the American promise over 150 years later. Although Juneteenth celebrates the long overdue freedom of Black people in the United States, it also serves as a reminder that more work needs to be done to advance racial equality and justice for all.
